The degraded areas of mine workings currently serve little purpose for the Yanomami. The open areas are frequented by few game animals apart from the occasional deer. Jaguar, which apparently like open spaces, were said to use them occasionally, and curassow and other birds sometimes come to the edges of the manmade lagoons to drink. It was said that these areas contain unusually high concentrations of venemous snakes.
